Stevenson Flushing Notice

The City of Stevenson Public Works will complete fire hydrant flow testing throughout the City’s system on the week of April 27-May 1. The purpose of this test is two parts; the first reason is to ensure all hydrants with the fire system are functioning properly. The second is to gather information such as water pressure, flow capacity, general hydrant information and to identify any maintenance needs.

What you can expect:

  • During the flushing operation please expect to see crews working within the shoulder of the road. The process of flushing involves discharging a large volume of water through the hydrant. Please stay clear of the area for your safety and the safety of the public works crew.

  • When tests like this occur within our distribution system, small particles on valves may be dislodged and released within the system. Along with this, discoloration of the water is possible. These situations do not present any health hazard or cause harm to your system. While these conditions are not a health hazard, they sometimes can cause staining.

  • Public works crews will be flushing the system all over the town, and much of these situations will be flushed out of subsequent hydrants. If you find these conditions within your own water system, we recommend flushing it through your bathtub or outside faucet.

Suggestions

  • As mentioned, flush your own system if conditions within your water system present brown/red water. Flush well past the water clearing in color.

  • It is also advisable to drain your hot water tank by manufacturer’s instruction.

  • Be sure the water in your washing machine runs clear prior to running, this will reduce the already small risk of damage to your items.
